Christine A. Yared, Attorney & Counselor at Law

Christine A. Yared is an attorney who specializes in employment law, civil rights, family law and criminal law. Christine has practiced law in Michigan for over 25 years, litigating cases in both the state and federal courts.

Christine has taught Constitutional Law & Civil Liberties, Sexual Orientation, Law & Policy, Civil Litigation, and Legal Research & Writing at Grand Valley State University. She has also taught Criminal Law and Procedure at Grand Valley State University’s Police Academy. She has articles published in the American Bar Association’s journal, Human Rights, the Michigan Bar Association’s Family Law Journal and in the book Gay Histories and Cultures, George E. Haggerty (ed), Garland Publishing Inc., 2000.

Christine has extensive public speaking experience on issues including domestic partnership benefits, same-sex marriage, hate crimes, criminal sodomy laws, parenting issues for same-sex couples, child custody law, employment discrimination, sexual harassment, the coming out process and diversity issues for K-12 teachers. In addition, she presented professional papers at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences’ annual conferences about criminal sodomy laws, same-sex marriage and sexual orientation curricula. Yared has conducted gay and lesbian diversity training sessions for governmental and university employees. Christine has been interviewed by the print, radio and television media about her cases and the issues listed above.

Christine has served as co-chair for the West Michigan chapter of Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (”GLSEN”). She has also served as past President of the Lesbian and Gay Community Network of Western Michigan, Inc., and former President of the Riverside Elementary School PTA. In addition, she was appointed to the Grand Rapids Civilian Appeal Board to hear citizen appeals from the police department’s Internal Affairs Unit. Christine has also served on many committees for the Michigan Bar Association and Grand Rapids Bar Association.
